5 Tips to practice Yoga  in the Summer

I always remind my students  that Yoga is for  life. It is a way of living that aims towards a healthy mind in a healthy body.  I often wonder why people think that they should cease their yoga practice because it is day light! Other forms of physical exercises, like aerobics, assure only physical well-being. Here are 5 tips to practice yoga during the summer .

  1. 1. Stay Committed

Yoga in the summer

  1. A lot of people step away from their yoga practice during the summer and return in the Autumn, struggling to get back into the rhythm.  It is easy to get distracted when the sun is beaming and we have long endless evenings and having such fun. Over the Winter, you have built up your yoga practice, including moving with awareness, breathing and meditation, so why lose it? Building a healthy body is a lifelong commitment and there is no finish line.

    2. Practice Outdoors

  1. Stand on your mat outside and simply breathe in the life force that surrounds you. I enjoy my yoga in the summer because it is casual and free spirited. Remember not to  have a set time or routine. Practice whenever suits you. I also feel that my practice is more stronger as I move slower. You will feel better by  been surrounded by nature. You will really feel the oxygen flowing through your body, clearing your mind and feeling free.

3. Learn a Cooling Breath

Yoga in the Summer

Summer has it’s disadvantage as well. In Ireland we have a mild to cold climate with an exception of an odd sunny day. However if you were living abroad with soaring temperatures, I would recommend a cooling breath to keep you sane!

The word “sheetali” means cooling  and this breath will cool the body and mind and reduces the body temperature, this may have positive effect on the endocrine glands and nervous system.  It has a calming effect on entire nervous system, especially it stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which induces muscular relaxation and is very effective in stress management. If you are stressed then 10 minutes of Sheetali breath can calm you. So this pranayama is very effective for relaxation of body and mind so you are ready for yoga in the summer !!

(a) Sit in a comfortable position, with the back upright.

(b) Stick out your tongue and roll it like a leaf.

(c) Inhale through the mouth for a count of 4 and exhale through the nose for a count of 6 . Practice this for 4 minutes and you body temperature will have dropped.

Please note, If you have any queries contact a qualified yoga practitioner.

4. Be Casual

When the kids are off school, time does not exist. The routine is gone out the window so why torment yourself with a schedule. Go outdoors for long walks and picnic with the family. Enjoy the family time but always include your yoga in the summer routine. Instead of edging yourself towards an hour long practice, break it down to nugget size pieces and practice for 10 minutes at a time. This will ensure that you are keeping on top of your yoga practice.

5. Be Adventurous
